Review: Still Standing
Still Standing by K.S. Oliver
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is my first read by the author but would not be my last. Still Standing takes the readers on a journey of being a survivor. Although KS Oliver battles every day, she still finds the strength to be positive and move about her day. As outlined in this poetry book, the author has a strong support system and two sons that motivate her to fight through the pain each day. KS Oliver shows through the power of prayer, even when it is questioned, we can overcome our struggles. The author vividly displays how each day is a struggle and lets readers in on her innermost thoughts on the day she received her diagnosis.
This poetry book is very inspirational. You will have a range of emotions as you read through it. I applaud this young woman for bringing this debilitating disease to the forefront of society and letting readers know there is no "certain look" for those suffering from Lupus. She is a true SURVIVOR!

BLOG SPOTLIGHT: Fanita 'Moon' Pendleton
Can you please tell us who is Fanita 'Moon' Pendleton?
I am a woman of many talents and ambitions. I am an avid reader and storyteller who
decided to share part of myself with the world.
I am a parent bent on leading by example. I am a career woman who spent
many years in a profession that I love.
I believe in education and positive growth. I am my Sisters Keeper.
What was your inspiration behind The Moscato Diaries?
The inspiration for the Moscato Diaries started over a glass of
wine. I sat back with my pen and pad and
wrote dear diary…….and Murder and Snake were born.
What do you wish more people knew about the publishing side of things?
I think most people have a misconception about publishing,
independent or not. If done correctly
there is a lot of work and preparation that goes into delivering a quality
product.
What would you consider your greatest accomplishment?
By far my greatest accomplishment has been raising my son. He is my legacy.
Do you have a philosophy by which you live?
My philosophy is to believe in myself and never wait for others to
believe in me.
What type of legacy would you like to leave for your readers?
Quality over Quantity.
How important was a "platform" in selling your books?
I signed to SBR Publications in February 2013, without the love
and acceptance of the TBRS Family my release of Shoot First Ask Questions Never
that was released in April 2013 would not have been as well received as it
was. SBR took a woman who had a lot of
drive and an excellent work ethic along with the ability to write quality work
and gave her a platform to shine. No
matter what I do in this industry I will never forget that.
Do you have book signings coming up where readers can meet you?
I make it my business to schedule at least two
events a month. The easiest way to find
out where I will be is to go to my Facebook Fan Page (Fanita Moon Pendleton)
Can you tell us about your upcoming project(s)?
I have several personal writing projects in the works Fist Full of
Tears he Sequel, The Moscato Diaries Sequel, Act Like A Lady Think Like A Boss:
Las Vegas. I am also Co-Owner of Blaque Diamond Publications and have several
authors releasing that pure fire throughout the summer. I also am the owner of Urban Moon Productions
and have several entities that fall under this company. I have an author who is releasing his second
novel soon, I work with a wonderful group of authors in the Southeast Virginia
Authors Showcase and we network with each other and participate in events to
increase our exposure as authors. I am
also working on a special project that is sure to increase my satisfaction as
an entrepreneur and an author.
What advice do you have to an aspiring author?
For a new author I would say if you are not at a place in your life where you can GRIND on a daily basis to scratch out a place in reader’s hearts and mind then just continue writing and wait until you are ready to put your best foot forward.

What's Mine
Is Mine
Lafourche Parish, Louisiana
Good dick will make a real bitch pay
attention. No need to nickname it, it is what it is. The lone tear that trailed
down her cheek as he drove to the central point of her being yet again, was the
proof in the pudding. Desiree wasn’t a novice when it came to good dick, she
had, had her share. On the other hand, she had never run across a nigga who
could literally make her see stars like Snake. As he placed her right leg on
his shoulder and went deeper than she thought was possible, Desiree couldn't
help but yell out “Ohhhh shit baby, that’s my shit right there!” Her breathing
was labored. She was panting like she was in a Lamaze class preparing to bring
a baby into the world. The deeper he went, the more her heart declared she was
in love.
Desiree closed her eyes as she clamped
her pussy jaws on his thickness and gave as good as she got. She visualized
that Snake loved her as much as she loved him.
Thinking to herself; “how could he fuck
me like this without feeling what I feel? How could he even consider marrying
somebody else? This is my dick, he better ask somebody.” With that last
thought, she opened her eyes quickly; she was almost frightened of her
feelings. What she saw was Snake staring right in her face while he continued
to punish the pussy. Desiree couldn't tell from his expression what he was
thinking, which both scared and pissed her off.
Snake was unaffected by Desiree or how
she felt. She didn't think he knew the deal but he did. He just continued to
dig into her tight waterfall with a goal to bust a nut and bounce.
She already knew what this was hitting
for, he thought. He continued to stare at her as he dug her back out; her
moaning never stopped. Snake felt that familiar tightness in his dick as his
body constricted and the explosion he sought blanketed him. “Urgggghh…fuck D,
shit girl!” He was sweating heavily and breathing hard as he shook his head,
gathering enough breath to say “Girl that pussy is dangerous.” He smiled at
Desiree as he rolled away from her body, still trying to regulate himself.
Desiree felt the room spin while she
tried to regain some semblance of balance. In every other aspect of her world,
she was in control. Yet, with Snake, she was always off kilter. Whenever he called,
he could get it; he knew it too, which was tragic. Snake didn't take her
seriously; all she was to him was a good fuck. She watched as he began putting
on his clothes.
Once again, fuck and run. Snake never
stayed the night with her nor allowed her to stay the night with him. He would
always say “Overnights are for wifey.” That statement hurt her deeply. She knew
he didn't consider her wifey material, and for the life of her, she couldn't
understand why. Desiree was 5'8” with what old people called good skin; her
body was well-proportioned - 160 lbs. with an ass perfect for grabbing. She
made her own money and was a Bawss in
her own right. “So why the fuck am I not wifey material?” She thought to
herself.
The only answer she could come up with
was Ariel. Desiree knew before she started fucking Snake, he was engaged to
marry Ariel but she didn't care. She believed that after they spent time
together and he sampled her juicy fruit, that a young ass, fat chick wouldn't
stand a chance. Boy was she wrong.
Snake was completely dressed and calling
her name while snapping his fingers, causing her to regain focus in time to
hear him say “I got to bounce, got some business to tend to, I’ma hit you up
later.” Desiree watched the words leave his mouth and made up her mind right
then.
“That bitch Ariel has got to go, because
what's mine is mine.”

BLOG SPOTLIGHT: Ben Burgess Jr
Can you please tell us who is Ben Burgess Jr.
I'm a father,
a poet, an author, a teacher, a personal trainer, and a Detective for NYPD. I
wear a lot of hats because I like to uplift and help people.
What was your inspiration behind Wounded?
I was working
on another novel, my next novel "Love and Happiness" when my
co-workers told me I should write a book with a Lesbian protagonist. At first I
thought it wouldn't be possible since I wasn't a woman and knew nothing about
being Gay or the LGBT community. After going to a Lesbian bar with them and
talking to the women there, I decided to work on the book. I did a lot of
research. I talked to fifteen women on top of the five couples I interviewed,
to hear their thoughts, feelings, and philosophies about being a Lesbian. I
listened to their joys and pains. I also mixed some of my family into my characters
to add drama and heart to them . "Wounded" was the hardest book I
have written so far. With "Monster", it was easier because 90% of
that story was about me, but this story was a whole different world for me. It
was both challenging and exciting at the same time.
What do you wish more people knew about the publishing
side of things?
There is a lot
of blood, sweat, and tears that goes into every book especially if the author
is self-published. Reviews are important. Word of mouth is important and every
time a person reads a book in its entirety, likes the book, and returns it
anyway, that's a slap in the face of that author who worked so hard to produce
that book.
What would you
consider your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest
accomplishment is my daughter Jaelynn. She is my motivation and inspiration for
everything. Everything I do, is to give her the best possible life I can
provide.
Do you have a philosophy by which you live?
Ten (2) letter
words. "If It Is To Be It Is Up To Me" I think that we all possess
the ability to do anything we put our minds to. Through hard work and
dedication, I think we all can accomplish great things.
This is
actually really important for me. I want to inspire people. I want people to
know that I got rejection letters from publishers and agents who told me that
my first book "Monster" was too dark. Despite being rejected
countless times I self published and won two book of the year awards for the
book. I want people to say one day "I'm going to be a successful author. I
might be self published, but my book will reach people and help to change the
world just like Ben Burgess did" I would love to be successful enough to
make an even bigger impact on supporting urban neighborhood than I do now. I
want to raise children that all contribute to improving society and the world.
I have a lot of work to do to bring this legacy into fruition, but I'm down for
the challenge.
How important was a "platform" in selling your
books?
It's very important. As a self published author, I have to
do everything possible to reach my fans and potential fans. As an author, you
need to have ways that you can interact with people... I like people to see that I'm not just some
robot trying to get them to buy my books. I answer questions and give advice
when asked. I feel being involved with your fan base like that, strengthens the
bond that you have with them.
Do you have book
signings coming up where readers can meet you?
I don't have a
venue yet for "Wounded" but , I plan on setting something up within
the next couple of weeks.
Can you tell us about your upcoming project(s)?
My next
project is called "Love and Happiness" It is a sort of spin off from
"Monster" based off a character named Karen that was one of Ken's
clients in that book. A sample for "Love and Happiness" can be found
in the back of "Wounded" *All of my books are connected in some way.
For example in "Wounded" Ron is friends with Dr. Andrews. They were
in the same Fraternity and roommates. Also the characters Will and Lou make a
cameo in "Wounded" they are in the next book "Love and
Happiness" I like all of my books to share the same universe.
What advice do you have to an aspiring author?
There will be
lots of times when you want to give up. There will be times when people talk
bad about your book or sales might be low. Never give up. Believe in yourself
and believe in your work. Learn from your mistakes. Learn your craft by taking
classes and reading other authors. Research the industry. Two of the most
important things: Find a credible editor and promote, promote, promote. You
have to put your heart and soul into your work. While it will be hard and you
will go through trials and tribulations, in the end it is worth it when your
book is entertaining people and it is successful.

“You slept with my aunt?”The words still didn’t register, even though this had to be Tori’s fifth time saying them. She glared at her fiancé, still desperately trying to come to terms with the information her mother had blasted to everyone at the packed Thanksgiving dinner table.
“Seriously? How is that even humanly possible when you didn’t know the woman four hours ago?” Tori shouted.
“Tori, l-let me explain,” Dallas stammered.
Twelve pairs of eyes were now focused on the not-quite-blissful couple standing at the bottom of the stairs just off from the dining room.

Chris Kline’s eyes fluttered open and he saw only darkness. He was lying on a cold, hard ground—concrete, he thought, naked—no wait, not naked. He still had his boxer briefs on. He sat up and as he did, a wave of unsteadiness came over him. Whoa. He shook his head, trying to clear cobwebs, and when his equilibrium settled enough, he tried to stand, but couldn’t because of a manacle fastened around his right ankle. He shivered.
Where am I?
What’s going on?
Think, Chris. Think!

It had been a long time, four years to be exact, but I was ready. The night I had been dreaming about was finally here. My life was playing out like a well-rehearsed script, and I had the starring role.
I wanted a life with him.
It was my time; sweet victory was in the air.
I was Sasha Simone Jansen and I had come to win.
Now, as I sat at my vanity poised and proper with my hair done and make-up flawless, I stared at my perfect cocoa complexion and smiled. I had to be the luckiest girl in the world. No, that wasn’t it. I’m a Christian, and we don’t believe in luck.

Nothing would be the same again. That I knew for sure, though the uncertainty of what exactly that meant sloshed inside of me as I unlocked the door to my office and quietly asked my mother for guidance.
Instantaneously, a peace settled in my soul, just as I knew it would; but the question marks still pricked at my brain.
Three hours later, my secretary alerted me via the intercom that I had a phone call and the feelings of unrest surged again. I pushed the Talk button.
“Kingston speaking,” I said.

Review: Friday Night Love
Friday Night Love by Tia McCollors
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Zenja Maxwell is a woman scorned. On the verge of a divorce, Zenja is ready to enjoy life and not reflect on how much her husband, Roman has hurt her. Little does she know, Roman is a man on the mission to get his family back together again and will stop at nothing to make it happen. Knowing that he needs to cut through Zenja’s hurt, Roman gets the assistance of their good friends, Caprice and Duane. After receiving an invitation to a Friday Night Love session, Zenja and Roman are forced to take a hard look at their marriage and the part each person played in it. Through Bible based challenges, the couple starts getting to the root of their problems but is it enough for reconciliation? Will Zenja and Roman go their separate ways?
Friday Night Love is a great Christian story on the power of love, faith and forgiveness. It shows us that at long as we keep God at the head of our household, we can get through anything no matter how many obstacles are thrown our way. I must admit that forgiveness is never easy but we have to have faith and let God lead our steps. He will never steer us wrong even when our mind says differently.
This is my first read by the author but it will not be my last. Zenja and Roman are relatable and made for great character development as we re-examine our own relationships. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline. I was happy it showed that no one is exempt from infidelity. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

"The heart isn’t like the liver. It doesn’t regenerate, no matter how much time passes. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. I’d left mine with Sebastian when I walked away that day, and I hadn’t seen it in the seven years since.” — Lux Kincaid
At eighteen, Lux is forced to make a choice. One that nearly destroys her.
She breaks a boy’s heart.
She breaks her own, too.
Seven years later, Lux never expects to see Sebastian again — especially not when her career as a journalist is hanging by a thread and she’s stumbled onto the story of a lifetime. As she chases down leads and explores the dark underbelly of Manhattan, Lux will put her life on the line. But after crossing paths with a still-unforgiving Sebastian, it’s her heart she’s most worried about.
Amidst the blame and the betrayal, the hurt and the heartbreak… can two lost lovers ever find their way back to one another?
Lines will be blurred. The past will be unearthed. And Lux will find out that some secrets aren’t meant to be kept…
SAY THE WORD BY JULIE JOHNSON – EXCERPT #1
I’m not a bad person.
I vote, I pay my taxes on time, and I make funny faces at babies in the supermarket to make them laugh. I tear up at those awful animal cruelty commercials Sarah McLaughlin is always singing on, and I shower on a regular basis. I donate to charities even though I’m still juggling monthly student loan and car payments on top of my rent and grocery expenses. I stay out of the drama at work because work is hard enough to get through without wondering which of my catty coworkers is going to stab me in the back with a knife clutched in her perfectly manicured fingers. I don’t smoke or drink excessively – fine, I admit, occasionally I may indulge in a few too many glasses of merlot, but nobody’s perfect – and I force myself to go running in Central Park at least three times a week. By anyone’s standards, I’m normal. A girl with her act together. Some might even call me “nice” and, for the most part, they’d be right.
I’m not a bad person.
I’m just not a particularly good one either.
To be fair, you can’t ever really consider yourself a good person when you’ve been singlehandedly responsible for the utter destruction of another person’s happiness. And that’s really the only term you can use to describe what I did to Sebastian Covington all those years ago – I destroyed him. I watched unflinchingly as the life and love drained out of his eyes, and walked away without a backward glance.
It’s kind of funny how a decision you make when you’re eighteen can change your whole life forever. And by funny I mostly mean absolutely fucking terrible. When I broke off our relationship, I knew I was hurting him worse than he’d ever been hurt. Harder, though, was the knowledge that I was putting myself through unimaginable pain from which I would never recover.
I still remember that evening so clearly; I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. Two eighteen year old kids, standing at our spot by the old oak behind his house. The hot summer sun was setting and a slight breeze chilled the air as we stood a few paces apart staring at one another. Bash could read me better than anyone – even before I’d spoken, I think he knew what was coming. His eyes had changed, an unfamiliar wariness filling them as soon as my lips parted.
I’d taken a deep breath and forced myself to say the words that would tear us apart forever. And when I’d turned my back and walked away, haunted by the look of betrayal and incomprehension in his eyes, I’d known we’d never speak again. The damage I’d inflicted with my words had cut too deep to ever really heal. I didn’t let myself cry then – that would come later, when I was alone in my bedroom and could finally allow the dull ache of my shattered heart to spread through my system like a lethal paralytic.
I’d known then, at eighteen, that my case of heartbreak was terminal, incurable. It wasn’t “puppy love” or “first love” or any of the loves that supposedly fade with time and large quantities of ice cream. Because when you walk away from your soul mate – when you take real, true love and throw it in the fire and watch as it burns down to ashes – you know you’ll never be the same again. The heart isn’t like the liver; it doesn’t regenerate, no matter how much time passes. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.
I’d left mine with Sebastian when I walked away that day, and I hadn’t seen it in the seven years since.
