GUEST BLOG POST by Ben Burgess Jr

Fire

I get asked often, “What inspires you to write? What motivates you?” There are so many answers to that question. I’ll try to explain some.

My biggest inspiration/motivation is my daughter. As a parent, I want nothing but the best for my child. I look at her as an extension of myself. I didn’t have a great childhood. My parents didn’t have a lot of money, I was insecure about myself, I lived in poverty, and I missed out on opportunities due to a lack of funds. While my childhood wasn’t the best, I had a great role model, my Mother. I watched my Mom struggle to pay bills, work two jobs, put herself through school all the way up to her doctorate, and moved us out of the bad neighborhood we lived in into a house in the suburbs. She did all of these tasks on her own. My Mother did the best she could to push for me to have better opportunities than she did. She pushed me to want more out of myself and to become the best person I could be. That is exactly what I want to do for my child. I want to instill in her that strong work ethic and will. I want her to realize that with hard work and dedication, she can do anything she puts her mind to. I want her to see how I juggle being an NYPD detective, personal trainer, Father, and author. I love her and I want to be that positive role model she looks up to like my Mother was for me. Every achievement, every award, every acknowledgement I receive, I want her to understand that I put 100% into everything I do. I pray that it pushes her to be a great person.

When I was a child, I had a teacher tell me, “You’ll never amount to anything. You’ll just be another drug-dealing thug like the rest of the people in your neighborhood.”(That’s the light version of what she really said.) I had two choices. I could’ve proven her right or proven her wrong. I chose the latter.

As an adult, I still face those who put me down and I fight to prove them wrong. For every five people who praise my books, there’s at least one who despises it. It’s those people, the ones who tell me “You can’t do it. You’ll never be good enough.” That motivates me to keep trying and to keep pushing. When I wrote my first novel “Monster” I tried to publish traditionally. Many publishers and agents believed my book was too dark. I received tons of rejection letters and I was told that my work wasn’t good enough, it didn’t have mass appeal, and it wouldn’t do well in sales. I could’ve given up, but I wanted to prove them wrong. I decided to ignore what the publishers and agents told me, and self-published. “Monster” did very well. It was on the Amazon best sellers list for a few months, is used in two high schools in NYC for their reading curriculum, and received very good reviews from credible book reviewers.

While I had those positive aspects, I also had negative ones. There were those who told me that “Monster” was nothing more than porn and smut. Some readers didn’t see the true message in my work and while it hurt (Still does), I had to understand that everyone will not like me or the topics I write about. Again, I wanted to prove those people wrong. I entered writing competitions and I’ve won the 2013 Readers Favorite Book Award for Urban Fiction, the 2014 Beverly Hills Book Award for African American Fiction, and I was a finalist for both the 2014 International Book Awards, and the 2014 National Indie Excellence Awards. Recently, I’ve won the 2014 Readers Favorite Book Award for my latest novel “Wounded.” I’m very happy for winning the award and the reviews that came with it.

As I’ve grown as an author and matured as a man, I’ve learned through my literary journey that while turning negative things into positive ones is a good motivator, the most important motivation and inspiration comes from within. Writing to prove people wrong shouldn’t be why I write. If anything that should be a small source of my inspiration. The real reason why I write and what I can never lose consciousness of is that writing makes me happy and I believe my words can truly help people. When I receive a good review or I get an email from a reader explaining how my book helped them, that’s my real inspiration. That’s what helps to keep that “fire” burning, to encourage me to keep doing what I’m passionate about.

In conclusion, I know I still have a long ways to go in the literary world, but as long as I have the “fire” to keep pushing my limits and trying to reach as many people with my books as I can, I know I will make it. I have to continue to write outside the box and, write about topics that will make people think and change their perspectives. With hard work, I know I will continue to be successful as long as I don’t lose that FIRE.

 ==========================

I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing Ben Burgess Jr's latest novel, Wounded.  Here is my **FIVE STAR ** review:

"Wounded” is an emotional and raw novel that takes you on the journey of Samantha Miller, a lesbian stripper and her path of self-destruction. Sam has had a hard life since her childhood. The abuse she has suffered during those impressionable years has made her blinded to love. Sam has no faith in men and throughout the book, you can see her harsh feelings towards them as she delves in and out of relationships with women. She is constantly on the hunt to find her next victim to ‘turn out’. Love is nowhere on the agenda until Sasha comes on the scene as a bartender at the gentleman’s club where Sam dances. Cultivated by Sasha, Sam makes it her mission to conquer Sasha in her bed but Sam is the one who gets caught up. One night changes everything between Sam and Sasha.

This book opens up a discussion regarding many issues in today’s society in regards to rape, LBGT lifestyles, and hate crimes. Sometimes we don’t determine who we love whether it is the opposite or same sex. When we do fall in love, we fall hard. The more we deny the feelings we have for a person, the more it seems to pull us in. We see in this gripping lesbian fiction book that our past shapes who we become in the future and only we can change the way that journey ends.

Ben Burgess Jr, who is also the author of Reader’s Favorite Award book, Monster, does an impeccable job in developing the plot. Readers are left on an emotional rollercoaster as they turn the page of this novel. This story also makes you conscious of the way you treat anyone from the LGBT community. Sam and Sasha’s character was developed so well, you felt every emotion they were experiencing from pain to happiness to heartbreak.

I applaud the author for embarking in this journey from the outside looking in. Great job!

The Quickest Way to Kill Your Online Success

Posted from Author Marketing Experts:

The Quickest Way to Kill Your Online Success

I have a friend who lives in San Diego. She and her boyfriend rented this lovely home outside of the city. They have tons of land, a great house. It was really a fantastic deal. Since they were in such a good place, the rent was cheap and they had no intention of moving anytime soon, they decided to do some minor renovations to the house.  This became their “weekend warrior” project. They’d paint, tinker, plant and in the end, they had a great and slightly improved property. Then one day the owner stopped by for a visit. “Bad news,” he said, “I need to sell this property and I have a buyer who wants to offer top dollar, in a market like this I’m sure you understand why I need to take it.” They had 30 days to move out.

Now, you might think this is a very sad and unfair situation, but it happens all the time. And it doesn’t just happen to real estate, it happens online too. It’s a great thing, this social networking, but what a lot of people forget is that you don’t own the sites you are populating. While Facebook owns the world (pretty much) right now, things could change. But more than that, sometimes a slight “uh-oh” from you and a slight violation of the site’s terms of service can cause you a world of grief. We had a client several years ago who built up 5,000 friends on his personal profile. I kept cautioning him about doing promotion on that page as Facebook has rules against doing promotion on a personal profile. He continued to do promotion (though not heavy) and lost his page. He never got it back. His entire tribe of 5,000 people were lost in the minute it took Facebook to pull down that page.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to utilize these tools and promote yourself, but just remember: as much as you might feel “at home” on Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube, and Twitter, you don’t own these properties. They do. Be smart and make sure you aren’t making these sites the center of your success. Here are a few tips to help you own your real estate.
Website: You should always, always, always have a website. I know some authors who use Facebook as their websites. Big mistake. I know other authors who get a website that doesn’t belong to them, meaning they are part of a community of free sites they don’t own. If the community decides to stop doing websites and goes away, guess what happens? So does your content.

Smart Social Media: One of the things I really recommend is that you center all of your content around your website. That’s partially why I suggest linking your blog to Facebook and Twitter. The content starts on your site and gets funneled from there, rather than in reverse.

Other ways to promote: Consider other ways to promote your stuff that isn’t social media centric. Interviews on (other) blogs, and websites. Yes, you are still putting stuff out there on other sites, I’m not saying not to. I’m saying that you need to make sure that whatever content you put out there is reflected on your site as well.

Duplicate content: There’s a problem with posting huge amounts of duplicate content online, but unless you are pushing hundreds of pieces out a month, I doubt you have anything to worry about. However, the flip side is that you want to make sure you have copies of all the content you put out there. If you’re uploading a video on YouTube, don’t delete it off of your computer because you think it’s “safe” on this site. It may very well be, but if you lose your page or YouTube gets bought (again) and morphs into something else, you’re in trouble.

Website more: When I talked about having a website, I’m not just talking about having a one or two-pager. I mean have a robust site packed with content. Make sure that you have a blog, and you might consider adding a resource section, etc. All information about your books should be on the site (don’t rely on Amazon to house this for you) and be sure that any ordering information is on your site as well. Wait! You might ask, is Amazon in danger of going away? Not likely. But as they’ve shown in the past by pulling down books and buy buttons without warning: they are Amazon and can do whatever they want.

Traffic: So, the nitty gritty of promotion is what? Sales, right? Sure, and exposure too (though I think you should target exposure first, then sales, but that’s another article). If you’re sending all of your traffic to social media sites, guess what? Your website traffic is probably pretty low or non-existent. If you send traffic to social media sites guess who benefits? Well, certainly you do in the way of exposure, but long-term this isn’t a good plan. Let me explain why. If you aren’t promoting your site as the center of the universe, and instead pushing people to social media sites, then your website isn’t getting those super valuable incoming links from blogs, websites, etc. that you are promoting yourself to. As a result, your site will sink in Google rankings. That means if you lost one or more of your social media sites, you could certainly pick up the pieces and start sending people to your site, but that will be a long, hard haul. Better to focus on that now and gather that traffic, along with the buzz you create in social media, so you aren’t caught with a zero starting point if anything happens.

You might think that the moral of this story is a slightly paranoid “trust no one” mantra but it’s not. It’s about protecting your stuff and being a smart and savvy author. You would never open up a store in a mall without a lease that locked you in for a certain amount of time, right? While there are no guarantees in anything, you need to be smart about all of these wonderful, free, not-owned-by-you social media sites. You might do a fantastic job of driving traffic, fans, and likes to various pages, but the reality is that you should focus on what you own; your website. I love my social media sites and yes, it’s a widely known fact that I’m addicted to Twitter. Yet they aren’t the center of my online universe, my website is. Yours should be, too.

Wishing you publishing success,

Penny & Everyone at AME

Review: She's Got Her Own

She's Got Her Own
She's Got Her Own by Kem M Smith

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

She’s Got Her Own is a five star urban Christian read that focus on the ups and downs of a couple who each is trying to find their own way. Brian Franklin is a man who is very involved in the church and believes that his wife, Sharay should be home taking care of the children and not working. Sharay feels she would be more productive in her current career and refuses to bow down to her husband’s wishes. In one day, rash decisions are made and Sharay is doing the one thing she never thought she would. Brian is happy but Sharay is struggling. As we all know, when momma is not happy, no one is happy and this hold true in the Franklin household as well.
Secrets are revealed, feelings are hurt and their lives will be changed forever.

The author, Kem M Smith does an exemplary job of developing the Brian and Sharay’s character. I can feel the emotions each of them have gone through. The plot is realistic as I personally know families who have gone through these trials. Great job Kem on this novel and I look forward to reading more of your works.

Chatting it Up with Author NeNe Capri

Can you please tell us who is NeNe Capri?
I am the Author of several Urban Fiction novels which includes, The Pussy Trap series, Trust No Bitch series, Tainted: Lies. Fear. And Death, Love is Blind a book where 100% of the proceeds go to fight against domestic violence and my new release Dream Weaver. I am the CEO of Boss Lady Publishing, Also Co-Founder of Writing Royalty and Writing Royalty Entertainment. I wear many hats author, publisher, book agent and paralegal. But, in all of my I have been blessed to accomplish the most important title, is Mom. Everything I do is for my princess.

What was your inspiration behind your first book?
Besides the fact that I had a story to tell, I loved the energy of the readers. I love the look on a readers face when they meet their favorite author for the first time, and the life in their eyes when they express their feeling about the characters and events in the book. To me as an author, there is no greater feeling.

What do you wish more people knew about the publishing side of things?
It is real work. It is not just make a logo, book cover, and upload. You have to teach and train your team. The work has to be professionally edited, typeset and presented in a way that will establish who you are as a company and brand. The publisher is then responsible for availing themselves of the knowledge of the industry, study, read, and research. The Publisher must set up a platform for their authors to sell books knowing that social media is not the only avenue if you want to see your team successful.

What would you consider your greatest accomplishment?
Personally, having my daughter. Professionally, I haven’t done it yet ;).

Do you have a philosophy by which you live?
“Good things come to those who wait…But only what’s left from those who hustle.”

What type of legacy would you like to leave for your readers?
I would like my reading Bosses to know, that with each book, I left my heart on the page.

How important was a "platform" in selling your books?
Having a platform is very crucial to the sale of a book. Each product has an audience. As the author we have to write with our target audience in mind, then we have to market in accordance to our readers and the readers who would never read our style of writing. But if you write only for you and your community, you will miss out on meeting a whole world of great readers.

Do you have book signings coming up where readers can meet you?
Yes, I do. I will be in Texas in October 3-6 with Sisters of Essence Book Club keep your eyes peeled for updates and advertisements.

Can you tell us about your upcoming project(s)?
I am currently working on The Pussy Trap 4 and Tainted 2. I also have a new series I will be introducing at the end of the year. Dun, dun, dunnnnnn…#Trappin

What advice do you have to an aspiring author?
Study your craft. Learn the elements of language and disruption. Don’t rush the process or skip steps editing, cover art, formatting, marketing, promoting, and contracts you should know something about every aspect of the industry, before you even get started. Your favorite authors put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get where they are, if you want what they have, you have to do what they have done. Learn and study the art and tell a different story, be honest to your pen. Admire the work of others then go create the opposite, your readers are waiting for you. Build a brand you will be proud to stand on.
