Excerpt

“Nma, so where’s this husband you keep saying you have?” Abayomi heard the man say as he approached.

Olanma giggled and then abruptly stopped. Abayomi knew that in that moment she sensed his presence. She turned sideways, but the man she was with was so busy checking her out that he didn’t see Abayomi walk up.

“If he’s not taking care of…”

“I hear you’re looking for me and I take care of my wife just fine.” Abayomi came to a halt between Olanma and the man.

The look of shock on both their faces was satisfying. Nma? He couldn’t believe she allowed another man to call her that. Not even her father called her “beauty.” Only two people had that privilege – he and her grandmother. Or so he thought.

Abayomi snaked his arm around his wife’s waist and kissed her hair. He then stretched out his other hand to the man. “Abayomi Rice, said husband.”

The expression on the man’s face switched from shock to embarrassment. At least he had some shame.

After a few moments, he heard his wife say, “Yomi, this is Emeka Maduka, an old friend.”

Old friend? That’s what she thought. The man wanted her. Abayomi wasn’t fooled. He wrote the book on old friends. It was time to cut this little reunion short. “It was nice meeting you. I’ll take my wife now.”

Abayomi didn’t wait for a response before he ushered Olanma out of the ballroom. He found a secluded area where they could talk. He stared at her and began to pace. He had never been good at hiding his possessive nature.

“Yomi, that was rude and what are you doing here?” Olanma asked in a hushed whisper.

“Apparently, reminding you that you’re still my wife.”

She stared at him in disbelief. “No, I’m not doing this with you.”

“Really? Nma,” Abayomi said, his tone laced with irritation and sarcasm.

“You’ve got some nerve. You pop into Lagos two days ago, and then you don’t come home…” Her voice was shaky with rage. “I’m not doing this with you. Not here.” She began to walk away.

Abayomi exhaled. He was messing this up. “Olanma, wait.”

She stopped, but didn’t turn around.

“I’m sorry. I saw him touch you and then you laughed with him. I haven’t heard that sound in ages and I saw red.”

He hadn’t meant to reveal all that, but masked feelings were what had brought them to this point. If there was going to be a chance for them, they would have to lay down the masks. And since he was the one that was served with divorce papers, he had to take the first step. His prayer was that his vulnerability would lead them back to the intimacy they once shared. Where their souls were tied as one and hopefully rebuild their trust. He hoped she would see that.

Olanma walked back to him and stared at him intently. “It’s been a year. What did you expect? That I’d curl up and die?” She turned and walked away.

Her heated eyes showed him her soul. She was hurt, but so was he. This wasn’t what he imagined for them. Past the pain and anger he saw in her eyes, he also saw longing and love. It was clearer to him that restoring his marriage would be an uphill battle. Losing, however, wasn’t an option.

Omar knew he had taken a risk showing up at Morgan’s office, but he was desperate. It had taken a lot to persuade Malcolm to share his sister’s information, especially since Omar had declined to say what had happened between them. He toyed with calling first, but changed his mind because he didn’t want to chance her refusing to see him. The woman seated outside Morgan’s office, whom he assumed was the assistant, greeted him with a wide smile and an exaggerated sway of her hips as she led him to the office. Omar ignored the not-so-subtle brush of her breasts against his arm when she turned to leave. In his peripheral vision, he noticed the slight rise in Morgan’s eyebrow and knew she’d seen it, too. He waited until the woman closed the door before turning to face Morgan.

Morgan folded her arms. “What are you doing here?”

“Hello to you, too,” he said.

An embarrassed expression crossed her face. “Sorry. Have a seat.”

Omar took the chair opposite her desk. “I apologize for stopping by without calling, but I figured you wouldn’t see me otherwise.”

“You were probably right. How do you know I won’t call security to throw you out now?”

“I don’t, but I’m counting on your love of football to work in my favor.” They engaged in a stare-down for several seconds until she looked away first.

“How did you know where I worked?”

“Malcolm.” She frowned and he added, “If it’s any consolation, he adamantly refused to divulge your home address.”

“Well, maybe I won’t kill him, after all.”

He chuckled.

“Since you went through all this trouble, I guess I can spare you five minutes.”

Omar knew the mention of football would rouse her curiosity. “I’d like to talk to you about a business proposition.”

“What does that have to do with football?”

“My contract is up for renewal in six weeks and—”

“Don’t you have an agent? If memory serves me correctly, you have one of the best agents around.”

“Things aren’t always as they seem.”

She sat up straight. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying it’s time for a change, and I’d like you to negotiate my upcoming contract. You’re an attorney and, according to your brother, you know football like you’ve played it all your life.”

Her eyes lit up and her mouth fell open. “Are you serious? Wait a minute.” She sat back again and angled her head. “What about your current agent? Did he dump you or something?”

Omar sighed. “No.” There was more to it, but he would only tell her if she agreed to represent him.

Morgan narrowed her eyes. “There are dozens of sports agents out there, and I’m certain any one of them would be happy to take you on, especially with your numbers from last year. Yet you’re in my office.”

He smiled. “You checked my stats? So, you’re admitting I’ve got game?”

A rush of color darkened her face. “Why me?” she asked, ignoring his questions.

“You want to be an agent, and I need one.” He leaned forward and whispered, “And I know you passed the sport’s agent certification test. It’s a win-win situation for both of us.”

“On second thought, I am going to kill Malcolm,” she muttered.

“I need your help, Morgan. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.”

“I have to think about this.” She turned slightly in her chair and stared out the window, and then back at him. “You realize I already have a job. And I’m working on a case.”

Omar nodded. “I understand, and I have no problems working around your schedule.”

“Even on weekends or late evenings.”

“Anytime.”

“I see.” She went back to staring out the window.

He could almost hear the wheels turning in her head. She bit down on her lip, drawing his attention and reminding him how much he enjoyed kissing her.

Finally she angled her head his direction. “I’ll agree on one condition.”

“What’s that?”

“You keep your hands and lips to yourself. No more kisses.”

Omar groaned inwardly. There was no way he could go without kissing her. In fact, it had been the first thing on his mind from the moment he saw her today. “Morgan—”

“No. More. Kisses,” she repeated.

However, his nemesis, King Kong, sees it differently. Rivals since childhood, King Kong is hell-bent on destroying Suave at any cost. As the war over power, drugs, and money intensifies—from Wilton
Gardens (Rema) to Arnett Gardens (Jungle)—bodies are dropping like flies, washing the island of
paradise in blood.

But it is the murder and kidnapping of two of Suave’s loved ones that bring him to his knees. Being
framed for murder, hunted by the cops, pursued by his enemies, betrayed by friends, tormented by a
horrid secret, and fighting to protect his family and empire, Suave is nearing his breaking point. Yet, he isn’t going down without a fight.

Voilà! Suave makes a deal to eradicate his enemies—but if it backfires, it could very well cause him his own life. Then God counteroffers Suave’s deal with His own—one that will undoubtedly give Suave the victory he needs but requires him to give up his drug empire and turn his life over to the Lord. With his motto being, “I don’t do God,” will Suave accept God’s deal or take the risk of his own deal?

“Today, I want to talk to you about redemption,” Bishop Hudson began. “Ephesians 1:7 says, ‘In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.’

Amen. Redemption is possible through the blood of Jesus! Hello, somebody? I said, you can be delivered from the bondage of sin and find peace with God. Am I speaking to somebody?”

“Amen, Pastor,” a member shouted from the front.

“You better speak to me, Bishop,” a young lady in the choir yelled.

Bishop Hudson paused, took off his jacket, and handed it to his assistant. He grabbed the microphone
out of the stand and paced the pulpit. “We all are in need of redemption. You know why? Because we all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God.”

Hmmm, interesting, Suave thought. Even Christians need redemption, too.

As if he read Suave’s mind, Bishop Hudson remarked, “So you can act like you were born holy, pure, and righteous all you want, but that’s not the case. We were able to become a child of God because Jesus paid the price for our sins on the cross. His death was in exchange of our life.”

“Praise the Lord,” “Thank you, Jesus,” and “Hallelujah” rang throughout the church.

“Do you want to be free from the burden of guilt?” Bishop Hudson asked, looking out at the
congregation.

Suave shifted in his seat, wondering why the bishop was looking at him.

“Do you want to be free from curses and bondage?” Bishop Hudson stepped down from the pulpit into the aisle. “God already purchased our freedom,” he said, his eyes wandering from one face to the other as he moved closer to the back.

He better stop picking on me, or else I’m stepping. With his arms folded and face screwed up like a dried apple, Suave defiantly stared at the bishop as he seemed to get closer. I’m no punk.

“I said, you can go from being a sinner to a saint if you accept God’s gift of eternal life.” Bishop Hudson was now at Suave’s bench where he paused.

Suave glanced at the bishop through the corner of his eyes, his head held straight. He didn’t
acknowledge the bishop, and for his own sake, Suave was hoping the bishop wouldn’t acknowledge him.

“I’m glad to see you this morning, my brother.” Bishop Hudson looked down at Suave, who still wasn’t looking at him.

All eyes in the church turned toward the back where Suave sat. Alwayne and Annette held hands and
nervously looked on. Bishop Hudson was known to prophesize to his members, revealing things that no one else knew but God. He would also predict certain happenings that always came true. This usually made some members excited about receiving a blessing, and others nervous when they hadn’t been walking on the “right” side.

“God is going to give you a second chance.” Bishop Hudson rested his hand on Suave’s shoulder. “Those demons that are haunting you are leading you down a narrow road.”

Suave’s heart began to gallop in his chest. He wanted to brush off the preacher’s hand, but he felt
compelled to hear what the man had to say.

“Your mind gets so mixed up at times that you find it hard to differentiate between the real thing and
your imagination. But God says to tell you that He is going to give you the victory.”

Some people were now standing on their feet clapping, some praying, and others speaking in tongues.

“Deliver him, Lord,” an elderly man shouted.

“Set your son free, Father Jesus,” screamed another member.

“God is going to right the wrong that was done to you, so you can be free to serve Him and His people.”

Tears filled Bishop Hudson’s eyes as he leaned over to Suave, his face only inches away from Suave’s.

On a will of its own, Suave’s neck turned, and he locked eyes with the bishop. Suave’s tears betrayed

him and seeped down his face.

Where are you from?
I was born in Pontiac Michigan, about 25 miles from Detroit. I moved to
Tennessee as a teenager, and lived there until 13 years ago, when my wife and I
moved (and currently live) in North Carolina.


For those who aren't familiar with your work, can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am the son of a minister who was determined that his children would learn to
play a musical instrument. I earned a Music Ed. Degree and became a choral and
piano instructor at the high school level. I began writing about 13 years ago as a
dare from my mentor and friend, the bestselling author Jacquelin Thomas.


What is your newest book about?
HELL IN THE CHOIRSTAND is the story of two musicians that play in a Detroit
area church named Ezekiel Baptist. The protagonist, Jeremiah David Day, loves
the Lord and wants to do His will, while the antagonist, Renard Singleton, decided
to join a Demonic musical cult, the Society of Tyrus. Both characters are
determined to use their music to wage an immortal battle against the other.

What inspired you to write this book?
I’ve always listened as Christians talk about Satan’s mission: steal, kill and
destroy, but I’ve never heard much talk about how his occupation tries to
accomplish his mission. According to the Bible, Satan was the “anointed cherub
that covers.” Meaning – music was his occupation. Well, I decided to use my
knowledge of music to craft a novel which yielded an interesting story, but also
showed a Biblical, musical and historical significance to Satan and his defeat by
God.

Is there a message in your book that you want your readers to grasp?
One of the characters in HELL lives at the end of the story, so I have decided to
write what will by my very first sequel.  My readers should look out for HELL IN
THE CHOIRSTAND II: The Spawn of Tyrus

Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?
Don’t look at the title of this book and assume that the story is about church
drama, although there is some in the story. Be prepared for a message much
deeper than that!

What is your favorite Scripture verse and why?
II Timothy 2:15. “Study to show thyself approved unto God. A workman that
doesn’t need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.” In order to be a
disciple of the Word, you have to study it for understand so that you can convey
the message of God’s Word to others.

Do you have a favorite time of day to write?
There is nothing like the quiet of the morning. That’s my best time to hear my
characters as they talk.

ABOUT THE BOOK

There’s no battle like a spiritual one! In HELL IN THE CHOIRSTAND, Jeremiah David
Day moves to the spiritually desolate city of Olds, Michigan. Jeremiah, an anointed
Gospel musician, receives an invitation from Rev. Daniel Trantham, the pastor of
Ezekiel Baptist Church, to become their minister of music. Ezekiel’s congregation
welcomes Jeremiah as he goes to work establishing the music department as an army
of worshippers, but Renard Singleton, the church organist, feels that Jeremiah is
unnecessarily disturbing the natural order of things.

Renard resents being overlooked for the music minister position, and enters into a spree of revenge against Jeremiah through botched choir rehearsals and petty squabbles with individual singers. Renard concentrates the majority of his activities, however, in the spiritual realm.

Unbeknownst to Jeremiah, Renard is a member of the Society of Tyrus; a secretive, demonic cult of musicians with chapters (The Pentagrammatory) that span across the country. Renard prepares a series of musical spells and incantations; prescribed from their secret book (Codified Manual of Tyrus) whose origin dates back to the 9th century and believed to be inspired by Heaven’s (excommunicated) original chief musician, Lucifer. Renard’s intention – use music to erect confusion among God’s people through
the worship services.

Renard’s father, Adrian, attempts to dissuade his son’s scheme with the admission of a thirty year old family secret, but it’s to no avail. Equipped with the new information, Renard heightens his damnable acts – the planting of arcane devices in Bibles, morbid musical arrangements, and secular compositions that call for the eradication of the people of God. As the story progresses, the Tyrus Society’s annual DOA – a nationwide strategic confusion of church worship - is fast approaching, and Renard wants to be at
the forefront of the movement.

But God has sharpened Jeremiah’s weapon.

A battle ensues as the two musicians take up arms; Jeremiah embraces the Lord while
Renard clutches the Ras el-Ain. The result is a musical showdown amidst a worship
service where human and instrumental voices unite to summon the ear of God and
mobilize an angelic host.

Titus Pollard is a critically acclaimed Classical, Jazz & Gospel musician, educator,clinician, playwright, and actor.

He is personally responsible for teaching some of the most renowned artisans of contemporary music. Some of his former students have been in the employ of Dr. Bobby Jones, Maynard Ferguson, the New York Repertory Theatre, Kelly Price, The
Clark Sisters, The O’Jays, and the Morehouse Glee Club.

His most recent projects include the novels Hell In The Choirstand and Living Right On Wrong Street. In addition to his writing, his most recent projects include his role as Rev.
Cole in the film A Black Woman’s Guide to Getting Married (2008), the Gospel music CD Conversation with a Psalmist (2007), and the musical director of the stage play The

What You Won’t Do For Love is the story about how love forces us to make difficult choices.  Eden Price has finds herself in the midst of a heated love triangle. One man connects with her soul and the other with her heart. She chooses one, (it would spoil the fun if I told you which one), but the honeymoon period is cut short, because he falls deathly ill and asks her to him out of his misery.

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book? 
That the hard choices in life require the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

·         An Author, Teacher, Conference Host, Public Speaker, Encourager, Motivator, Ordained Minister of The Gospel, Radical for Christ, the list goes on ...

·         Married (10 years); this is a second marriage for both of us.  We have five children between us – All Girls; women actually since the youngest is 18.

·         I’m in the process of earning a Master of  Arts in Human Services – Executive Leadership from Liberty University.  I am also a graduate of Grace Christian College where I earned my Master's of Divinity and a Bachelor of Arts in Theology; and a graduate of the University of Richmond, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a Concentration in Finance and a Minor in Leadership Studies.

·         To date, I have authored two books Welcome to my Morning Glory and I Didn't Know, taught numerous Bible Studies, have been a featured speaker at several conferences and hosted numerous ministry events; most notably The Throw Yo' Hands Up Conferences sponsored by Surrounded By Faith Ministries.

·         What began as a mandate from God to train and equip women in the ways of the Lord so they would become like the Proverbs 31 woman in the Bible, has expanded to a platform of child advocacy.  Actually, my spiritual focus has always been on the family unit – to receive and achieve spiritual wholeness.    First, targeting women – to strengthen them as the nurturing forces they were created to be; and now giving a voice to the voiceless – our children.



What type of jobs or careers have you worked in the past?

For the most part I’ve always worked in Corporate America in the capacity of an analyst.  I’ve always had a fascination with numbers


Who are your favorite authors?

That’s a good question.  Let’s see; I like Bee Bee More Campbell, Maya Angelou, Rick Joyner, Joyce Meyer and Juanita Bynum.



What are your favorite books?
 

Wow, I’ve never thought about this before and I can’t really say that I have a favorite book or books.  I remember buying a collection of books by Maya Angelou and how much I really enjoyed reading them.

I would say that I like a variety of books by various authors but I cannot recall all the names of the books; but to mention a few:  Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine, The Call, The Final Quest, The Five Love Languages, How To Enjoy Where You Are On The Way To Where You Are Going and The Threshing Floor.

I actually read in spurts and sometimes do not complete reading the entire book once I’ve gotten from it what I want/need.

 

 

Are you a full-time writer? If so, describe your day?

No, I’m not a full-time writer.  I write by inspiration.  I can usually go from concept to paper in just a few days; typically a weekend.  From there, it depends on the nature and the purpose of the book as to how many revisions and/or research is needs to be added to complete the book. 

 

 

 

 

 

Tell us about your journey to publication.

The journey of publishing my first book was simple and easy.  As I previously stated, I had written the book for myself not knowing that it was a book at the time.  In short, I did not set out write a book.  My second book was written intentionally.  I purposefully wanted to share my story and hopefully do my part to prevent it from happening to others.

Specifically, I wrote the book:

§  To expose the enemy (I believe this lessens his power)

§  To overcome the guilt & shame by being able to confront it head on

§  To encourage and educate others on how to identify, confront & overcome child sexual abuse

§  To set the captives FREE

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When did you begin to realize you wanted to write?

Well, I’ve always written in some form or another and I believe that’s because I’ve always been a dreamer.  I enjoy journaling and writing plays.  I did not realize that I had the capacity to write for an audience until some of my school papers were reviewed for a counseling class.  From there I sat down one weekend and wrote my first book.  At the time I did not know it was a book because I was merely just getting/putting my thoughts and feelings on paper for me.  After my husband read it he said I should publish it.  From there I met with a publisher, who was also my husband’s publisher (he writes poetry), and I guess I can say the rest is history.
