Review: After Wednesday: A Short Story

After Wednesday: A Short Story
After Wednesday: A Short Story by Nakia R. Laushaul

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

After Wednesday was an okay short story to me. Although the characters were defined, too much going on in the short span of the book. Characters and scenarios were introduced near the end and left me wondering…who and where did that come from? To make the story flow, I think the author could have made this book a novella or full length novel.

A Husband for Christmas: A Holiday Novella
A Husband for Christmas: A Holiday Novella by Nakia R. Laushaul

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Husband for Christmas was my first read by the author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a mix of love, humor and sensuality rolled into one. I was rooting for Pretty Brown Eyes and her online interest. When you let down your guard and allow love in, you just may find it.

I need a full length novel on this story. Great job and I look forward to reading more of your titles.

Review: Vengeance Will be Mine

Vengeance Will be Mine
Vengeance Will be Mine by Chyta Curry

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Revenge is sweet even when it is unexpected.

Vengeance Will Be Mine is a great story of a woman, Rhonda who survived the lowest points in her life and came out swinging to gain the win in the end. There has been many times when we as women take more than we deserve in the name of love from our husband (or significant other but when is enough, just that…enough. One click this story to be taken on an emotional ride. Sometimes you would want to slap Rhonda, other times you want to hug her as we all know someone like her.

Although there were a few grammatically errors, it did not take away from the story which flowed effortlessly. Each character was well developed and had its own identity. I applaud the author on penning this story of love and what it truly does not mean.

Review: My Husband and My Soulmate

My Husband and My Soulmate
My Husband and My Soulmate by Michelle Johnson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

My Husband and My Soulmate was a whirlwind, unrealistic novel of a couple who wanted the best of both worlds. The story did not flow well as while Danielle is pregnant with her husband, Percival’s child, she does some unthinkable things with a stranger, Daniel, with whom she had just met. Although her husband was a jerk, it would have been nice to see the story flowed and developed with Daniel.

As in most cases of infidelity, this story makes you think and brings the issue of the “down low” brother to the forefront. Too many men are living double lives and putting everyone at risk rather than being up front with their partner. Also, “all that glitters is not gold” so be careful.

Although the flow was off, I would still like to read part 2 to see how it all ends and give the author a second chance.

Review: Love & Happiness

Love & Happiness
Love & Happiness by Michelle Cuttino

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In this novel, we meet many characters but each one was clearly defined and developed to the point you knew them. The main character, Roxanne Linden was a confused woman who hid so much of her past inside that when confronted by the demons, it overtook her existence and made it hard to cope with everyday living.

Ms. Cuttino brought to light many realistic issues from being a plus sized woman to being uncertain of one’s sexuality. When those issues clashed, it caused an explosion of truths along with the need to be accepted. But in the end, was Roxanne being truthful with herself? Did she find love and happiness?

This was my first read by the author but will not be my last. Very few authors are able to intertwine so many characters in one book without confusing the reader but Ms. Cuttino mastered it by giving a background on each one of them while you are reading the story. The story had a great flow plus the added bonus of the main character being a plus sized lesbian.

One click this book today to be tangled in the web of love, lust and betrayal amongst family and friends.

Excerpt from The Devil Made Me Do It

Prologue

1975

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep (Genesis 1:2)

Two ominous figures sat in quiet contemplation, the larger one’s head was gargantuan in nature, and foul droplets of acidic mucus fell from his protruding fangs.

The smaller one stood sixteen feet tall and his rapier tail was wrapped protectively around his middle. He sat as still as cold hard stone. His sinister eyes were yellow rimmed and telegraphed evil cunning. He was known as The Leader.

Their silhouettes cast eerie shadows against the backdrop of the smoke-filled flames that spewed from the lake of fire.

“Ummm, this is my favorite place. Listen to the melodic sound of souls screaming in agony—it is music to my ears. If you concentrate, you can hear the desperate pleas for release. Yessss . . .It allows me to know that all is right in our world,” The High Master said.

The Leader shuddered as the menacing timbre of The High Master’s voice snaked fear around his chest. For him, it was equal to the singe of demon skin from a thousand innocent prayers; he loathed it. His tail subconsciously tightened as he awaited his newest orders.

The High Master continued, “These human souls are pathetic with their self-serving natures. They frighten at the sound of our bumps in the dark, but create havoc in their own lives. What idiots they are and not fit for company until they have totally crossed to our side. And even then they tire me soooo . . .”

The Leader didn’t stir; his thoughts were of survival. He refused to speak. He knew a wrong word could cause such suffering and pain. The High Master’s punishments are prompt and fierce. One seeks death, but yet, death will not come.

The High Master continued his tirade, his grimace displaying double rows of slime-covered fangs. His was a chilling profile. “Your charges are young. Both are being raised in good homes, and, as a result, they are overconfident creatures. Leader, do not underestimate their youth; innocence is a powerful weapon. In their kingdom, the weak become strong. But we must prey on that weakness and use it to our advantage. You must destroy them before they complete their purpose. I am giving you this head start; you must not fail.”

After speaking, he stood his full twenty feet in height, his shoulders reared back as his frame vibrated with his frustrated bellowing. “In the beginning, we owned their world. After the fall, we adjusted; the land we were given was dark and empty, but we were content with our lot. Then He whose name is not spoken, created man, and we were once again demoted. All we seek is our rightful power, our rightful place. Make haste, bold one, and steal, kill, and destroy all that stands in your way.”

The Leader bowed his head in submission.

“And, Leader—this was a most productive conversation. You are learning.”

The Leader’s tail unwrapped from his torso as he swiftly rose and slithered toward his point of ascent into the Earth realm. He was determined not to fail.

Excerpt

Addy stands in front of me, her eyes never leaving mine. She removes her shirt slowly and drops it to the side, her red bra cradling her exquisite breasts. I reach out placing my hands on her thighs pulling her to me, her soft belly in front of my face I kiss it tenderly running my tongue along the waist of her skirt. She places her hands in my hair and quietly moans. My hands run down her skirt finding the bottom. Lifting up the skirt and placing my hands on her smooth legs instantly hardens me. Her breathing is faster now as she works her fingers through my hair at a more rapid pace. I slowly slide my hands up the backs of her thighs and reach her lacy underwear, my fingers work themselves under the fabric as I grab her ass and pull her towards me so her groin is mere inches from my mouth. I look up at her with wild heat in my eyes. Pulling down her panties so they are around her ankles I take my hand and lift up her foot and slide them off, one side then the other. I drop them on her shirt that is next to me. Addy lets go of my hair and steps back. Her beautiful skin glowing in the waters reflection. She reaches around her and takes off her bra dropping it on the pile of clothes. Her nipples are hard, I lick my lips in anticipation of swirling my tongue over them.

Tilting my head he lightly bites my neck and then kisses it. “Oh, Michael.” I am breathless, closing my eyes leaning into his touch.

“You are so soft Addison, I want to lick every piece of you.” His hands start to roam slowly up my shirt.

Softly moaning I rub my ass into his crotch.

“I have to ask you a question.” I say softly
“What do you want to know?” He whispers in my ear.
His hands have made it to my breasts as I moan louder.

“Where did you put my underwear?” I say with short breaths.

Michael stops immediately and I can feel him starting to chuckle behind me.

“Are you serious right now? I am trying to seduce you, and you want to know where your…underwear are.” He states perplexed.
“Yes, it’s a legitimate question.” I state with a wide smile on my face.
He releases his arms around me, I turn around and he is standing with his arms crossed and trying not to smile, but his dimples are giving him away from being serious.

“Well… I am waiting.” I start to tap my foot.

“Addison Mire, I have a massive hard on right now.” He says matter-of-factly.

Looking down at his trousers I see a large rise in them. I look back at him and cross my arms.

“I think that I told you a few minutes ago that you ruined a sweet moment by smacking my ass.” I raise my eyebrows and tilt my head looking at him. “Remember that?”

Michel tilts his head and then looks back over at me.

“That was a love tap, I have done that exact same thing, only harder… if you remember.” Staring down at me like he is forcing me to remember.
