Secrets for Getting into Bookstores

Let's face it, regardless of the odds we authors still want to get into bookstores. But if you've been having a hard time with this, take heart. It's getting harder and harder to get into stores, but not impossible. We're going to look at some of the possibilities here.

First, it's important to understand the pressure stores are under right now. With the increased focus on publishers to get their authors out there, bookstores are being given most of their marching orders by their corporate office. Bookstore shelf space is bought and paid for by the New York publishers, making getting on the shelves or display racks a bit tricky - if not impossible. So here's a game plan for those of you trying to survive outside of the traditional market.

1. Get to know your local store: I know this might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many authors don’t really know the people in their local store. The thing is, if you know them, they know you. Then, when you’re ready to promote your book they might be more open to having you in their store if you have taken the time to get to know them.

2. Events: One way to get into a bookstore is by doing an event. Sometimes when you do an event the store may stock the book before and after you've done your program. Start to follow the types of events they do at the store. Get an events calendar or get on their email list. You’ll start to see trends emerge. For example, they might have an independent author night you could participate in. Also be cautious for big releases, like the recent Stephanie Meyer events many stores had planned. If you are trying to capture the attention of a store when they’re in the middle of a major book launch, you’re likely to be ignored.

a) Book signings are boring, offer to do an event instead. Events are a draw, book signings aren’t unless you’re a celebrity. Plan to do a talk, educate, entertain, or enlighten. This will be a more attractive pitch to the bookstore and will draw more people to your talk.

b) Get to know the local authors in your area and then offer to plan events for them. Here’s how this works: Bookstores are inundated with local authors asking for a time slot, but what if you went to the bookstore manager and said that you’d be willing to coordinate a once a month event featuring all the local authors? The bookstore could just refer all local independently published authors to you, you could coordinate this - and guess what? Not only are you helping the store, but guess who’s getting a monthly showcase in their store? You. You can do this with more than one store if you have the time, but keep in mind that with cutbacks often one store manager will oversee a few locations so you might only have to go through one person.

c) If they won’t let you coordinate a monthly event, suggest that they have an Independent author night if they haven’t already started this. If they have an Independent author night you should definitely participate, it’s a great way to gain exposure, not to mention network with some local people.

3. Local marketing: don't forget any marketing you do locally, whether it's speaking in venues outside of the bookstores, television, radio, or print. All of this can drive traffic into the bookstores. Market locally and when you do, let the stores know you're going to have a feature or appearance so they can stock the book, if they want to. It's always a great idea to get to know the managers or buyers for your local stores so you can alert them to media or an event you're doing. This not only keeps you and your book on their radar screen, but it's a nice courtesy to offer them. Most managers are stretched pretty thin and appreciate the buying tip, whenever they can get it. Even if they choose not to stock your book the first or second time, keep alerting them to your promotion. Eventually they just might.

4. Funnel your buyers: Try as best you can to funnel everyone to one store to purchase your book. If you’re having a tough time getting shelf space (and aren’t we all?), funneling folks to one store might prompt that store to keep a few copies of your book on hand. Whenever you do local speaking or media, let them know by name and address where they can get your book. Stores have been known to take in books that they’re getting lots of requests for, regardless of how they are published. If you’re sending people to one store - instead of fragmenting them to a bunch of different ones - you could start building an ongoing interest in reorders, and sometimes all it takes is one store to stock it before the neighboring stores will follow suit.

Getting into bookstores isn’t impossible, but it does require a dash of creativity. Keep in mind that if bookstores still aren’t receptive after you’ve tried the tips in this article then maybe you’re sitting in a tight market. Areas like Los Angeles, New York and Chicago might be tough areas to get noticed, because these are often the first stops traditional publishers seek when planning author tours and getting stocked on the shelves. If you’re near those areas, try looking outside of the city for alternatives that are often overlooked by New York. If that doesn’t work for you, then consider non-bookstore shelf space and events.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ - Always You by Missy Johnson

I was thrilled when I was offered a graduate teaching position at the prestigious Tennerson Girls Academy. At twenty-three, this would be my first ‘real’ teaching assignment. Working at the elite boarding school, home to the daughters of some of the wealthiest people in the world, was a great opportunity that I would’ve been stupid to pass up.

One week into my new job, and I suddenly had no idea why I chose high school…I was a seventeen year old boy once, I knew how teenage girls behaved.

You can’t even imagine the hell of trying to teach thirty, hormonal driven seventeen year olds who have been cooped up, away from any male contact.

I could handle the whispers every time I entered the room. I could even handle the obvious attempts at gaining my attention. What I couldn’t handle was her…

Rich bitches and way too many rules. Was it any wonder that I hated school?

Add to that the lack of male contact, and I was going insane. Like literally. I wasn’t used to this. A year ago I was normal. I had a boyfriend, friends and a loving family. There is nothing normal about me anymore, and nobody here lets me forget that.

My name is Wrenn, and I’m only here because my aunt took me in after what happened, but my aunt also happens to be the headmistress of this academy…Can you see my problem?

I’m hated for my lack of money, and I’m hated for who my Aunt is.

Then he arrived. Dalton Reed. My new history teacher.

Slowly, he helped me see that even in the worst situations, there is always hope.

Missy lives in a small town in Central Victoria with her husband, and her confused pets (a dog who think she's a cat, a cat who thinks he's a dog...you get the picture).

When she's not writing, she can usually be found looking for something to read.

Review: Freshmen Fifteen

Freshmen Fifteen
Freshmen Fifteen by Jasmine Nichole Harris Sheffield

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Laila is now a high school graduate and on this special night, she decides to give her virginity away to her long time drug dealing boyfriend, Travis. She had it all planned out except she wasn't expecting him to get arrested before she could even get to his house to indulge in their special act of love.

Pissed off and over Travis and his situation, Laila decides to embark on a new chapter of her life since she will be going to college in the fall. Once on campus, Laila totally forgets about Travis and has her eyes on a sexy senior named Chris. As her freshman year progresses, Laila develops feelings for Chris and decided to give him her virginity.

Little does she know, one of Chris' exes has plans to get him back. Who will Chris choose? Will Laila lose her virginity in her freshman year of college?

The author does a good job developing Laila and her friend's characters. I think a little bit more could have been given on Chris' background especially since Laila becomes so involved with him. I did enjoy the flow of the story as it gives you a realistic view of college life in regards to the dorms, parties and studying.

Review: Champagne Life: A Novel

Champagne Life: A Novel
Champagne Life: A Novel by Nicole Bradshaw

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Nicole Bradshaw pens a story of marriage and the struggles that a marriage go through when financial problems creep in.

Naomi and DeShaun are a couple who married in their early twenties. Although they weren't living the "good" life, they had each other and steady employment.

Their life spirals out of control when Naomi loses her job at the bank and DeShaun gets fired as a restaurant server. As the stress of overdue and shut off notices piled up, Deshaun does what he has to do to keep his family afloat.

Naomi becomes angry at DeShaun for the decisions he has made, although she urged him too in the beginning. All Deshaun sees are dollar bills. Feeling neglected, Naomi makes a bad decision that ends in murder.

This novel makes you see the lengths that one would go through to make money to survive. Ms. Bradshaw's plot has a seamless flow and she does an amazing job of character development. As you read, you get a feel of the emotions of Naomi and DeShaun as they go through their struggles.

I would definitely recommend this book to fellow readers. You will not be disappointed in this story of love, infidelity and murder.

Review: Suck Me Dry 2: Amari's Secret

Suck Me Dry 2: Amari's Secret
Suck Me Dry 2: Amari's Secret by Gemini Phoenix

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This story picks right up where part 1 ended. Tiffany has lust in her eyes and it is not for her fiancé, Amari. Charles is doing things to her she only wish her man would do. As guilt ends into Tiffany's soul, she questions on whether she should give in to her yearnings.

While Tiffany is in a battle with the devil, Amari decides to take matters into his own hands. He conjures up a scheme to see if Tiffany really is the woman for him and subsequently, travels to see a sex therapist to fix his own issues.

This story shows sometimes you set your own self up for failure. Great flow. Now I need part 3 asap.

Review: Love Changes

Love Changes
Love Changes by Eartha Watts-Hicks

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In her debut novel, Eartha Watts-Hicks pens a breathtaking novel of love and struggles.

Mia Love is a young mother who has been in a long term relationship with her boyfriend, Spider. In her heart she believes if she does everything and anything for her man, he would eventually put a ring on it. With that being said, Mia struggles to keep a roof over their head, keep the bills paid, take care of Spider and their newborn son. In the midst of all of that, Mia seems to lose herself and what she really wants. Sounds familiar? It is because all of us either know someone in that situation or have been there ourselves.

The only real friend Mia has is Romell, whom she has known since childhood. Romell is everything a woman would want in a man. He is handsome and highly successful but has commitment phobia so he moves from one woman to another in a blink of an eye. He often offers advice to Mia to help her in her relationship issues with Spider.

Throughout this story, you will get a feel for a mutual attraction for two individuals who feel they should not be together. In the end, will love conquer all? Does Mia finally take that walk down the aisle?

I applaud the author on the plot and strong character development. The book started off a little slow but when it did pick up, it took off with a vengeance. There was a nice flow of the book as it brought elements from the 80s in the form of poetry and song. I can not wait to read the sequel.

Review: In My Rearview Mirror: A Novel

In My Rearview Mirror: A Novel
In My Rearview Mirror: A Novel by Suzetta Perkins

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One word...WOW!!

Suzetta Perkins has penned another banger. This book left me with my mouth wide open and eagerly anticipating each page turn.

Imagine being pregnant and not sure if the baby's father is your soon to be ex or your one night stand who happens to be involved with a close family member? That stopped you in your tracks right. As you read this story, you dive into the life of Margo Myles again. She gives births to her twins and not sure who is the dad. She truly wants her ex, Jefferson to be the twins' father as she truly still loves him although they are just moments from finalizing their divorce.

Malik Mason, her one night stand and candidate for senator, wants to pay Margo back for dropping him like a hot potato, hence, he becomes involved with a close family member of hers. Unbeknownst to the family member, Malik might be the dad of the babies.

Ms.Perkins take you to a book version of America's favorite show, Scandal! This book has so many twists and turns that it leaves you wanting more all the way to the end. You will find yourself at times wanting to slap Margo and other times, yelling at Jefferson. Great suspenseful plot with a little bit of a love story. Job well done!

Review: I Do?

I Do?
I Do? by Frank Gresham

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Denise has found everything a woman could want in a future husband with Andre. It doesn't hurt that his career allows her to spend money anyway she wants to. When her best friend finds out a secret about Andre, it forces Denise to decide if the money and the lifestyle is worth it. Using the advice of others, Denise decides to go through with the wedding.

This is a good story BUT it has so many editing errors as it relates to spelling and/or grammatical. It does make the story hard to follow at times. Mr. Gresham, please hire an editor. You have great writing skills but it takes away from the story. Some of the errors could have been caught with spell check such as the misspelling of "gown" and "second" to name a few. Also, the story needed a little bit more character development of Anita.

Review: Concealed Betrayal

Concealed Betrayal
Concealed Betrayal by Dominique L. Watson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I picked up this book on a spur and I am so glad I did.

Calvin and Tina are in a marriage rut and neither one of them know how to get out of it. Calvin is having a hard time getting out of depression and Tina is tired of sitting around waiting for him to figure it out. Vows are broken with adultery when Tina gets fed up. It wasn't just adultery that shakes this marriage up in this story but who it was with.

Can you forgive a spouse after the ultimate betrayal? After how long? This story makes you sit back and wonder what would you do in this situation. We all say what we won't do but you never know.

Great job to the author with the twists and turns in the plot and developing the character of Calvin and Tina. I can't wait to read part 2.

Review: Mr. Goodnight

Mr. Goodnight
Mr. Goodnight by Benjamin Janey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ben has penned an interesting short story with Mr. Goodnight.

Randall Scott is a good looking cab driver who has multiple personas due to his fascination with checking out women online. On any given day, he changes his profile according to the persona he wishes to display online after reading the women's profile of what kind of man they are looking for.

Randall has one rich cab client, Ms Black who makes him step his game up as she only wants a man who is financially secure. Randall knows she will not give him the time of the day since his wallet is lacking. After seeing she is all about the dollar bill, Randall comes up with a scheme of his own to swindle money and sex from her. Little do Randall know, Ms Black is coming up with her own scheme.

Will one of their plots backfire? You have to read this story to find out. It has sex, greed and suspense written all over it.

Great job Ben!

When reality hits Malachi and Clarissa, will they be able to move towards a future together? Will Clarissa be willing to give Malachi another chance or does she have her eye on another man? Will Malachi and Clarissa come to grips to what separated them the first time?

You have to one click this amazing love story by Michele Grant to find out. It pulled at my heartstrings in so many ways as we all have had to deal with second chances and redemption. It is not always easy to forgive and forget when our heart has been put on the line. We can say what we will or won't do but in reality, you never know unless you are in that situation.

The author does a great job with character development especially with so many main characters to follow. You are given a sense of each one of them and their personalities. The plot is a made for television storyline. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Grant's works.
